| Greetings and welcome to my site. I hope you
enjoy your visit. I thank you for your interest in my artwork.
I thought I'd write a little about myself here. I was born 1969, an
Aquarius. (I don't know how much truth there is to astrology, but I fit
pretty well every description I've read of Aquarians: eccentric,
creative, intellectual, free-spirited, disorganized.) I did not go to
school for art or photography (I have a BA in English Literature, about
9 hours towards a Master of Library Science, and an honorary Doctor of
Divinity). In fact, the last time I had any art
instruction was in the 8th grade, 23 years ago at the time of this
writing. I took up photography in my 30th year. Someone had given me an
ancient Canon AE1 as a gift (LOVED it, wish I still had it. It
was stolen). I started shooting my daughter
obsessively; She was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen, of
course.
Soon the obsession spread to shooting butterflies and flowers and other
creatures and things of beauty in nature. I began to read about
photography and experiment a lot.
Now I continue to photograph my daughter, and other models, both
professional and otherwise, and I continue to chase butterflies and
photograph all kinds of different things. My photography style is
fairly diverse, but lately I've developed a penchant for black &
white portraiture, glamour and nudes that are high-contrast (other
photogs often accuse me of blowing out the highlights, but that's how I
like it). Photographers often speak of how important the light
is, capturing, manipulating, using the light. Personally, I have
learned that the shadows are often just as interesting, sometimes more.
I started painting even more recently (well, I've been painting homes for 18 years, but that's a different animal altogether, of course). For New Years '05 I made a resolution to stop putting off doing things that I'd wanted to do for some time. So on January 4, 2005 (only four months ago as I type this), I picked up a paintbrush and painted "Lie Down in the Grass". Since then I've created many, many paintings. It's become a worse obsession than photography, really. I enjoy painting figures and portraits. Although I enjoy photographing the beauty of nature, that beauty is a subject that I rarely approach in painting. Since in painting, I have much more latitude in terms of how I can manipulate reality, I tend to create images inspired by the fantasy, science fiction and horror literature that I enjoy, as well as my own dreams, and even nightmares. I am also often inspired to create art related to the many spiritual paths I have studied and explored. In the short time that I've been painting, I believe I've already established certain habits. More and more, I tend to stick to a rather limited palette, often opening no more than three tubes of paint during the creation of a single image (although, of course, with three tubes, I can mix colours and create far more than three colours with which to paint), bringing out form through manipulation of shadow and light (much as in black and white photography). I don't attempt to paint photorealism. If I want a photograph, well, I'm prefectly capable of creating one with my camera, and, if necessary, image manipulation software (I use the Gimp). It is my aim is often to create dream-like, surreal images that are capable of evoking an emotional response in the viewer. Sometimes, I confess, I don't know why I paint. There are instance where I've sat down to paint one thing, and something altogether has appeared on the canvas (or aquarelle or masonite or sheetrock, as the case may be). It seems that I have released a torrent of ideas from deep within my own subconscious mind, at times. I confess I have very little, if any comprehension of abstract art, but lately, I've even found myself creating some more abstract images that have come to me in dreams or in mediation. I can be hired to shoot portraits, events, and products. I can also be commissioned to paint portraits, signs, wall murals, even creative furniture refinishing is on the menu (I'm currently painting a mermaid on a 36x36" table top for a local restaurant. Can't wait to post it!). If you'd like to commission me, hire me to shoot (models, I may be available on a TFCD basis in most cases), or inquire about purchasing original pieces, tony at photodharma dot com.
